Need We Say More?
February was long and brutal. No football, hockey became all but meaningless (at least this year), and the weather wouldn’t make up its mind. Despite these setbacks, girls in green sashes stormed the neighborhoods, in their hands, a list that held the promise of a sweet escape from the mundane and unending cold. Yes, February was Girl Scout cookie ordering time! And what could possibly be better than these sweet delicious cookies, you may ask? Our only response would be, beer…. cookies and beer. So, for our first blog on our redesigned website, we are going to pair some of the best-selling Girl Scout cookies with some great tasting beer. Don’t worry if you find yourself salivating at the thought of trying out each of these parings. The beer is delicious on its own while you patiently await the impending arrival of your cookie order! 😉
Shortbread cookies and Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold
When you think of Shortbread cookies, you are thinking simple and easy. You get a classic cookie taste with indulgent hints of buttery goodness. So my first thought when thinking of what beer to pair this with, was to find something easy, clean and crisp to balance the richness of the buttery crunchy treat. Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold is just that; a light-bodied, easy drinking Lager that can be enjoyed at any time of the day – just like a Shortbread cookie!
Thin Mints and 42 North Red Army
A Thin Mint is a wonderful cookie that is dipped in a rich chocolaty coating with a burst of pure peppermint. So what beer is good with a minty, chocolate delight? I had to turn to a more rare beer for this one and cracked open a bottle of 42 North Red Army. Good choice! The Red Army is a 10% ABV Imperial Stout that was released in January. The big chocolate and coffee aromas and flavors perfectly enhanced those of the chocolate and peppermint patty! A truly enjoyable experience.
Peanut Butter Patties with Resurgence Peanut B. Porter
Well this was a simple one! This cookie is wonderful with a vanilla wafer base and a coating of rich chocolate atop creamy peanut butter. Complex and rich…delightful! Now enjoy it with a Peanut Butter Porter! Not a beer readily available in the market, but it is something available with our friends at Resurgence Brewing Company. It boasts balanced doses of chocolate, cocoa and toasted peanut butter with a beautiful head, aroma and flavor! This beer perfectly highlights the similar characteristics found in its cookie counterpart and balances out its sweetness with a lingering malty peanut butter finish.
Lemonades and Saranac Strawberry Tart
TEASER ALERT! This beer is coming out in March! The Lemonade cookies have a base of a traditional shortbread with a lemonade frosting to top it off. You get that nice cookie backbone with the healthy tang of lemon. Top that off with a Strawberry Kettle Sour and you have yourself a treat! Imagine a Strawberry Lemonade alcoholic cookie dessert! This is by far my favorite pairing!
Caramel Delites and Flying Bison Rusty Chain
So, full disclosure: Rusty Chain is always in my fridge and Caramel Delites just happen to be one of my favorite Girl Scout Cookies! Despite these facts, this pairing decision was a spur of the moment choice and, well, it worked! The Delites have a vanilla cookie base and are topped with rich caramel, chocolate stripes and toasted coconut. A truly amazing cookie. Rusty Chain is a Vienna Style Lager that has a malty backbone, bready aroma and a delicious flavor with hints of caramel. This combo HIT. THE. SPOT. The sweet nuances of the cookie were balanced nicely by the nuttiness and ever so lightly hopped finish of the beer. My go to Girl Scout cookie with my go to beer! Life is good!
I hope you enjoyed the first of many informative, engaging blogs. Go out, drink responsibly, and enjoy some cookies for a good cause!
